Grete Hale

The tireless philanthropist whose love of Ottawa drives her to devote countless hours to community service could spend a morning at a Beechwood Cemetery board meeting, an afternoon running a Christmas kettle for the Salvation Army, and an evening attending a fundraiser for CANHAVE, an international charity organization.

"Service to my community has always been a daily happy reality in my life.... It's a natural thing," Marguerite (Grete) Hale said. "My volunteer experience has made me the wealthiest person in the world."

Mrs. Hale, 77, is a founding member of the Community Foundation of Ottawa and the Friends of the National Library of Canada.

She serves on many boards, including the Royal Canadian Geographic Society, the University of Ottawa, and the Ottawa Council of Women, among others. She is also currently raising money for the Hospice at May Court.

Named businesswoman of the year in 1997, Mrs. Hale served as chairwoman of her family's frozen-food company, Morrison Lamothe Inc., for 21 years.

She said her love of the Ottawa community was fostered by her family. Mrs. Hale said her father built the first low-income housing community in Ottawa. Her sister, Jean Pigott, chaired the National Capital Commission and was admitted to the Order of Canada 11 years ago.

Mrs. Hale currently lives with her other sister, Gay Cook, in the oldest house in Ottawa, which their mother lovingly restored.

"I love this city, I love this community, I'm so privileged to live here," she said. Ms. Hale is attending the ceremony today with her two sisters and their daughters.

Her husband, Reginald Hale, passed away 13 years ago. He was disabled from war service and Mrs. Hale said that together they "learned to treasure every day. We lived like every day is a gift."
