Ottawa Youth in Philanthropy
2008 Youth Empowerment Grants
The following projects were recommended to the Foundation's Board of Governors by the Youth Advisory Committee, and were approved to receive grants of up to $2500 each through the Ottawa Youth in Philanthropy program:
Banff Youth Council – Healthy Lifestyle Program
This group of youth is organizing a program which aims to promote a healthy lifestyle for young people. Members of the council will coordinate workshops, organize activities and provide healthy snacks in order to educate youth about the importance of leading a healthy life through physical activity, good nutrition and education. The program is a youth-led initiative to raise awareness about health for a community in need.
Project Time Frame: July 2008 – March 2009
Project Location: Banff/Ledbury Avenue Community
Black Affinity – Rise & Flow Summer Program
This summer camp is designed for youth from low-income communities in Ottawa. The camp counsellors will provide musical training and counselling to help participants deal with emotional and personal issues. The goal is to motivate youth through music and help direct their energy through a positive outlet.

Odawa Native Friendship Centre – Dream Catchers Youth Program
This youth-led initiative consists of an enlightening program for young people to discuss significant issues in words and an environment that they are comfortable with. The program consists of educational workshops organized and presented by the youth council where they tackle such issues as self esteem, depression, addictions, sexuality, abuse, and promote healthy relationships. The goal is to engage Aboriginal youth by increasing participation and mentorship so that the program will be sustainable in the future.

YouthNet/RéseauAdo – YouthFax
YouthFax is as an initiative to distribute information to young people regarding mental health issues, mental illness and to breakdown stigmas associated with mental illness. The information distributed consists of a primary resource list and a mental health fact sheet. YouthNet is expanding the reach of YouthFax in order to increase youth participation in the group and raise awareness through information sessions in the community.

The Ottawa Youth in Philanthropy (OYIP) program was launched in 2005 to provide young people with an opportunity to learn and participate in community philanthropy. Designed to increase opportunities for Ottawa youth to act as leaders in the community, the Youth Empowerment Grants program funds projects that are proposed, selected and implemented by youth. Grants are provided for approved projects that are initiated and carried out by local young people.
